The University of Johannesburg (UJ) under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor and Principal Professor Ihron Rensburg has recently introduced a number of strategic initiatives to further support and develop high quality work and achieve recognition in the key areas of teaching learning and research. One such significant initiative is the establishment of the first UJ Chair in Teaching and Learning which seeks to achieve the highest distinction in scholarship and research in the field of Teaching and Learning within the higher education context. The Chair will be located in the Faculty of Education with direct reporting line to the Executive Dean of the Faculty. In addition the Chair will have a reporting line to the DVC: Academic on supporting emerging teaching and learning planning and policy matters in higher education. The incumbent will be required to: Conduct and publish research relating to the scholarship of teaching and learning within the higher education context; Research national and international developments in teaching and learning in order to support UJ in higher education planning and policy; Supervise masters and doctoral students in the field of teaching and learning; Recruit post-doctoral students in the field of teaching and learning; Contribute to national debates on teaching and learning policy and practice and establish national and international linkages to further enhance and promote the scholarship of teaching and learning at the University of Johannesburg; Support the scholarship of teaching and learning of others at UJ and make a major contribution to the on-going promotion of teaching and learning as a core activity at UJ within a national higher education context which is increasingly foregrounding teaching and learning. It is expected that over the three-year period of appointment the Chair will have attracted at least three masters students five doctoral students and two post-doctoral fellows.
