The Department of Science & Technology (DST) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) have introduced the Professional Development Programme (PDP) aimed at training South African Doctoral student and Post-Doctoral Research Fellows. The PDP is part of a suite of DST-NRF human capital development funding instruments aimed at increasing the number of skills personnel in science engineering and technology. The objectives are to: leverage research and innovation in Science Councils and National Facilities enable PhD students and recently-qualified Doctoral graduates to strengthen their skills and capabilities and consequently improve their prospects of employment in the science and technology environment attract and retain young scientists and professionals of the highest calibre; iThemba LABS has vacancies under the DST Professional Development Programme (PDP) for on doctoral student and four post-doctoral researchers. The available projects are: A post-doctoral position involving and investigation into the production of metal ions in the two Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRIS) the ECRIS4 and the GTS2 by two different methods. The Metal Ions from Volatile Compounds (MIVOC) and the conventional oven technique will be investigated. Furthermore the electron beam ionizer of the Nuclear Spin Polarized Ion Source will be replaced by an Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ionizer which is a project on its own. Minimum requirement: PhD in Nuclear Physics or relevant field. For more information contact Dr JL Conradie atlowry@tlabs.ac.za A post-doctoral project where the applicant will take part in the installation commissioning and characterization of the complete Accelerator Mass Spectrometre system at iThemba LABS (Gauteng). Subsequently the awardee should propose his/her own research projects as well as providing support for users of the AMS facility. Minimum requirement: PhD in Nuclear Physics or relevant field. For more information contact Dr SM Mullins atsmm@tlabs.ac.za A PhD position in which the beta-decay spectroscopy of neutron-rich isotopes near the close neutron shells at N=82 and N=126 will be studied in a collaboration between iThemba LABS South Africa JINR Russia and INFN Legnaro Italy. Isotopes near N=82 will be made by the fission of uranium those near N=126 will be provided using deep inelastic collisions. The neutron-rich reaction products will be separated using selective-ionization accelerated to 50 keV and transported to a measuring station where gamma-rays from excited states populated by beta-decay will be observed. Minimum requirement: MSc in Nuclear Physics or relevant field. For more information contact Dr RA Bark atbark@tlabs.ac.za A post-doctoral position that aims at the development of micro-ERDA and micro-NRA including micro-PIGE techniques at the nuclear microprobe facility of the Materials Research Department. The application of micro-ERDA is in non-destructive two-dimensional near-surface hydrogen mapping of nano-materials while micro-NRA will be used to obtain two-dimensional depth profiles of light elements such as boron lithium and fluorine in novel materials. including nano-materials. Minimum requirement: PhD in Physics or relevant field. For more information contact Dr W Przybylowicz at przybylowicz@tlabs.ac.za A post-doctoral position that will investigate the hydrogen storage capacity of Pd- and Ti-based systems using ion beam techniques. The research will aim at determining if metallic hydrides can be produced in surface coatings if oxide layers can enhance hydrogen obsorption and if the phase transformation can be accelerated by hydrogen.
