Crane Technician (Onshore/Offshore) Location: Cape Town, South Africa Department: Cranes & Lifting Job Purpose The incumbent will repair and maintain platform pedestal cranes in a safe and fit for purpose. In the absence of other information or instructions, the manufacturer s specifications and standards for each individual model of crane will be applied. Whilst maintaining and/or repairing the cranes the technician will adhere to the procedures and guidelines as detailed within the work packs supplied for offshore task or in accordance with the instructions of your immediate supervisor. All the necessary permit restrictions that apply within the area authority limit shall always be observed. The incumbent may on occasion be required to work on other non crane related projects involving PPU (process, pipeline and umbilical), hydraulics and valves. This Job Description is not to be considered exhaustive. You may be expected to contribute to other activities out with the scope of this Job Description. Main Responsibilities & Key Result Areas Carry out both routine and planned maintenance and repair activities on but not restricted to the pedestal cranes and associated component parts comprising of but not limited to, power plant, hydraulic system, pneumatic system, winches, sheaves, ropes etc Carry out and document all necessary planned routine and periodic maintenance tasks including spares usage Carry out where trained restricted crane operation, for the purposes of routine maintenance and functional testing Maintain a clean and tidy work site at all times. Dispose rubbish in accordance with local procedure. To ensure that all spare parts and materials utilised are in good order and fit for purpose To co-ordinate all other spares required to ensure the continuous operation and availability of the platform cranes Work with independent verification inspectorate in carrying out periodic inspections and load testing Assist as required within the individual abilities the platform maintenance crew on other mechanical plant at the discretion of the offshore installation management To carry out general maintenance, servicing and deck support duties To participate fully in the companies competency assurance programme Attend courses as deemed necessary by company commensurate with individual s position Carry out other tasks deemed within individuals training and competence Attend the company s onshore workshop to carry out repairs on crane components etc and general workshop duties Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities: - Participate in Incident Report Investigation To be aware of site general and specific procedures / guideline requirements Ensure a safe and comprehensive shift hand over occurs and is accurately recorded To read and understand Client EHS Policy and the company s Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Protection Policies, Organisation and arrangements Carry out their job description responsibilities and activities defined in project work processes and operating procedures Be aware of relevant legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes and good industry practice. Plan, organise and document work processes (including risk assessment TBT s etc) to deliver the required standard with minimum risk to personnel, plant, materials or the environment. Implement safe methods of work and maintain the existing systems to identify hazards and safe methods of material storage Be assured of the competence of all personnel you are working with in conducting those work activities for which they are employed In consultation with the EHS & QA Manager, identify any HSE specific training requirements of himself To ensure that plant, equipment and materials are adequate for the task provided and that sufficient information is made available to allow for safe use within their specification without harm to personnel or the environment Participate in clients / the company s safety workshop and team development programmes Ensure that accidents / incidents are immediately reported to both client and the company Observe the company s procedures relating to working in the company s workshop Technical Integrity: Ensure all maintenance and repair activities are completed to the highest possible standard To uphold the company s reputation and not to discuss or divulge any company information to any third party Cost Management: To put forward any consider any innovative ideas that could reduce operating costs To advise platform supervisors and management of the latest materials and techniques which are available to improve efficiency. Communication / Reporting: Effectively communicate with immediate supervisor, Lead Hand (where applicable), Company Directors, client offshore supervisors and offshore staff Ensure that all job and technical reports are accurate and timely Ensure that all timesheets are accurate and timely Actively participate in pre tool box talk and job briefing Participate in all aspects of current and future change processes Qualifications Essential To have served a full recognised mechanical trade apprenticeship or equivalent standard To be trained or in possession of NTC 2 or equivalent Preferred To have attended where possible a manufactures training program in the maintenance of platform specific offshore pedestal cranes. Experience, Competence, Skills & Knowledge Essential A minimum of 3 years experience in the maintenance of offshore Pedestal cranes including the repair and maintenance of hydraulic and pneumatic control systems and diesel driven prime movers Attended a crane wire rope inspection course Trained and capable of both giving and receiving crane signals as per British Standards by hand and where applicable by radio Trained and capable of carrying out slinging operations Skills: Possess and be able to demonstrate good communication both verbal and written Be able to establish and maintain good working relationships Be able to display a good team spirit Be observant and able to react to situations requiring immediate decisions Certificates: A valid combined Offshore Survival Certificate Proof of physical ability to perform function Basic Rigging / Slinging / Banksmen Course Certificates Knowledge: The Lifting Operations Lifting Equipment Regulations and all legislation concerning lifting operations and be competent in using both fixed and portable lifting equipment To be aware of and adhere to safe and environmentally sound methods of work and systems which identify hazards at each place of work Of applicable International standards, South African National Standards and Occupational Health & Safety Of Safety and industry regulations Qualifications: To have attended where possible a manufactures training program in the maintenance of platform specific offshore pedestal cranes.
