CA13605 Lab Manager (Air and Dust) Closing Date 24 June 2013 About the job: The Client Consulting and Analytical Services (CAS) unit has a vacancy for a Laboratory Manager in the Air and Dust Lab. The Air and Dust Lab had its origins as part of the Client Centre for Mining Innovation (CMI) where it conducted various occupational hygiene measurements for the mining industry. It strives to become a centre of excellence on the measurement of respirable dust and provides routine analytical services for airborne dust. The purpose of this vacancy is to build and grow a sustainable analytical services business (nationally and within the southern African region) comprising cohesive teams and suite of products and services aligned to serve the needs of the market and society. To contribute towards fulfillment of the CAS mandate as well as to assume the overall management of the Air and Dust labs. The position is based in Pretoria. Key responsibilities: Manage and maintain ISO 17025 accreditation within the air and dustlabs. Establish the hub & spoke model within the lab operational structure and ensure that the implementation thereof serves the marketplace. Accountable for the budgets (new and existing client) business development and provision of value-added solutions to clients and stakeholders to ensure sustainability of the air and dust labs. Manage capacity development of staff within labs to ensure sustainability of labs with regard to staffing levels and functions. Align the area s strategic objectives with those of the unit. Responsible for attracting new clients and retaining existing ones. Ensure appropriate capitalisation of the labs. Ensure that the air and dust lab has a proper business plan and that it is executed in conjunction with the individual lab managers. Ensure financial sustainability of the labs. Stay abreast of national and international environmental and occupational hygiene legislation. Manage the overall quality systems within the air and dust lab structure. Qualifications skills and experience: A Bachelor s degree in chemical engineering or environmental science with a mining background. Mining experience: understanding of the actual environment as well as the industry itself. Occupational hygiene background would be advantageous. A minimum of three years relevant experience. Financial background/understanding and business development experience. Must be able to communicate technical information to a diverse audience drawing on sound understanding of scientific principles in solving complex technical problems. Must have a demonstrated track record of business development and managing technical operations. Must be able to interpret scientific data and to apply specialised knowledge to ensure required information is provided. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to interact with clients subordinates peers and superiors. People and team building skills. Computer literacy and competency in MS Office. Open Office suite will be a recommendation. Good written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail. Ability to work accurately and well under pressure. Ability to manage across geographic spread. Awareness of latest technological and scientific methodologies and trends.
