JOB REQUIREMENTS Grade 12. 3yrs experience in cattle husbandry (working experience in a cattle farming environment). Zulu / English speaking. Will be required to assist in the supervision of the cattle health division. Training will be provided. Will be required to work every third weekend (roughly). Person should preferably be available to start on the 1st June 2013. The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) is engaged in the development and application of the DSSAT-Canegro sugarcane crop model and has an 18-month post-doctoral position available for a Crop Modeller. The position is based in Mount Edgecombe. The incumbent will work closely with leading crop scientists agronomists and modellers in the following research areas : Model-based assessment of climate change impacts on sugarcane production in southern Africa following the AgMIP protocol. Continued development of a gene-to-phenotype version of the DSSAT-Canegro model including experimental design and analysis of results refining of model algorithms development of genetic trait parameters for commercial sugarcane varieties and optimising genetic trait parameters for different environments. Developing and assessing approaches to optimising farm-level allocation of limited irrigation water supply. Duties are expected to include: Setup and execution of crop models and processing/analysis of outputs. Assistance with experimental design and analysis of results. Development and implementation of crop model algorithms. Documenting and publishing of model changes and outcomes of modelling-related studies. The ideal candidate will have : A Ph.D. in botany crop science agronomy soil science agrometeorology or related field. Experience in crop simulation modelling. The ability to use software to quantitatively analyse crop experimental data and simulate crop and soil processes. The capacity to conduct independent research.
