INVITATION - SANEC BUSINESS BREAKFAST
Thursday 10 June 2004 07h30 - 09h00 Sandton Sun hotel, SANDTON
Key-note Speaker:
Mr. Roger Baxter
Chief Economist and Economic Advisor, Chamber of Mines
On
Why has South Africa experienced such disappointing economic growth - can we do better and by how much?
During the last few years of a world economic recession, South Africa has generated so much good
news with its historically low inflation, fiscal prudence, steady move towards forex liberalisation,
high commodity prices (the China syndrome), strong Rand, political stability and international recognition
(World Summit, tourism, Soccer Cup), yet there are pieces missing in the puzzle of substantially higher
economic growth.
The Resources Sector has nearly always been the key to fundamental changes in S.A. as e.g. now with the
Mining BEE Charter, major taxation changes, broad based beneficiation in many other sectors of industry.
No better speaker to outline to what must, and can be done to achieve a substantially higher growth rate
than Roger Baxter. He is the youngest ever Economic Advisor of the Chamber of Mines with an academic
background (Un. Of Natal), business (stockbroking) and deep involvement in an impressive range of economic
policy issues from Nedlac to the current project “Breaking through the economic growth barrier”.
