The most exciting finish in years!
There is nothing more exciting in sport than a race that comes down to the wire. In this instance the race was the English Premier League Title and the exciting final match of the season conclusion. The two-horse race between the two Manchester rivals was such a closely fought affair that the result was determined by a stoppage time winner in the Manchester City vs QPR match on Sunday.
It took City 95 minutes to clinch the win against QPR and with that the League Champions title. Manchester City and Manchester United finished tie on 89 points but City had the better goal difference and were therefore crowned champions.
City almost blew their chances of a first league title in 44 years as they were in total disarray and shock when a 10-man Rangers team led 2-1 after the 90 minutes of regulation time. QPR had DjibrilCisse and Jamie Mackie to thank for taking the lead from City who went 1-0 up following Pablo Zabaleta’s opener.
But as Manchester United prepared to celebrate snatching a 20th league title following their 1-0 win at Sunderland, EdinDzeko and Sergio Aguero struck twice in two minutes to seal the most enthralling title duel in years.
QPR's defeat was not enough to send the Londoners down into the Championship however as their rivals for the last relegation spot Bolton could only draw 2-2 at Stoke.
In the other issues to be settled on Sunday, Arsenal clinched third place with a 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion while Tottenham sealed fourth place with a 2-0 win over Fulham at White Hart Lane.
Going into the final round of matches on Sunday Sir Alex Ferguson haddismissed talk of a new order in English soccer as bitter rivals Manchester City had an opportunity to snatch his team's Premier League crown.
City's unprecedented financial might has prompted talk of a power shift in English football after decades of domination by Ferguson's United.
However, the United manager was adamant that it was not the time for major analysis about the wider meaning of his team's failure to scoop a record 20th title after being in pole position until a few short weeks ago.
"I think we can think about that after the events and analyse it properly," said Ferguson.
"There's no point doing it now as nothing's been decided and it's the last game of the season, which is fantastic for the neutral and the media but agony for both clubs."
We wonder what Fergie will be saying now after losing the Crown and does City’s win indicate a shift in power? I guess we will have to wait for next season to find out.
